Twenty years ago, three friends from Missoula got together over lunch, and The Montana Watercolor Society was conceived. It wasn’t a new idea for Margaret Mudd, Marjorie Harper, and Lee Morrison. People had been discussing it for a long time. It was long overdue, and the time had finally come for Montana to have its own watercolor society.

These have been twenty exciting years for MTWS. Their membership continues to reflect an enthusiastic attitude toward watercolor painting.

Each year, members are encouraged to participate in the Annual Open Member’s Show and Watermedia Exhibition, by sending in their best paintings. Members look forward to these annual events for the opportunity to gather with other artists for the workshops, receptions, and exhibitions.

The Montana Watercolor Society’s Watermedia National Juried Exhibition is held annually at the Bigfork Art and Cultural Center, 525 Electric Avenue, Bigfork, Montana. Hours are 10:00am - 5:00pm Tuesday - Saturday beginning on October 1st until October 31st. Closed Sunday and Monday.

Artists from across the nation and Montana enter this highly rated show. Seventy-five paintings are chosen by a nationally known water media artist each year. Cash awards are given as well as merchandise awards totaling over $5,000. In conjunction with the Watermedia Celebration there is a free Opening Reception and Gallery Talk given by the juror. The Society sponsors a four day artist workshop, a slide presentation and social gathering, and an Awards Banquet with a Member’s Art Auction.
